Bristol’s Sutton takes aim at Southern Area title

MIDDLEWEIGHT Aaron Sutton believes claiming the Southern Area title will provide a shot in the arm for his boxing career.

The 24-year-old, who is from Bristol, is set to face Danny Shannon for the vacant strap in Neilson Boxing’s Fight Town show later this month in a fight that will see him collect his first professional title, should he be successful.

So far, the Sanigar managed prospect, hasn’t put a foot wrong in his career, winning all 12 of his bouts to date.

After going the distance in his first 10 contests, Sutton has seen an improvement of late after he recorded two stoppage wins at the back end of 2021, where he picked up wins over Christian Gomez and Gabor Gorbics respectively.

Joining him on the card in Swindon on Saturday 26th March is fellow Bristolian Anton Haskins as well as talent from across the South West such as Gloucester’s Max Mudway and Brad Ingram.

Looking ahead to the contest, Sutton believes he is on the precipice of some big fights, once he picks up the Southern Area title.

“I’m ready for people to start calling out my name for a fight, I’ve been ready for that since day one,” he said.

“I want people to want to fight me and I want to be fighting on the big shows where thousands of people come to watch.

“I think I’m more than ready to be on those shows but with everything it comes down to timing, getting the right fights and everything else.

“All I know is I am ready to go whenever and I think my manager (Chris Sanigar) knows that as well.”

While things have been going his way of late, Sutton has had setbacks in recent years after revealing he suffered with two bouts of COVID in addition to a knee injury in 2021.

Despite recovering from COVID and injury, the 24-year-old admits it did put back any preparations he had made.

“I did get offered a few fights during lockdown but I caught COVID, which really messed me up,” he added.

“That fight would have been a big one too, I was gutted to miss out. When I had COVID my fitness went straight down the drain.

“It took me a month or two to get back to full fitness, I was doing 20 rounds of sparring but afterwards I couldn’t get past three rounds.”
