Jensen Irving signs for boxing promoter Mark Neilson

HEREFORD boxer Jake Price says he is reaching for the stars as he prepares for the opening bell of his professional boxing career later this month.

Price will be making his professional debut on Saturday, November 20, on Neilson Boxing’s Fight Town show in Swindon.

His debut was first pencilled in for April of last year, before Covid-19 stuck and sent the sport into a standstill.

During lockdown the super-featherweight was also forced to reshuffle his coaching set up after his long-term trainer Paddy Fitzpatrick announced he was retiring from the sport.

However, with the help of his new manager Mark Neilson, Price has been working with Gloucester’s Jon Pitman, who has had considerate success of late by guiding super-lightweight Akeem Ennis-Brown to become British and Commonwealth champion.

Looking back at the delay, Price says he feels like he is better equipped than what he would have been back in 2020 as he unveils some lofty aspirations for his career.

“The plan was to turn professional with Paddy, but then Covid-19 came and everything went up in the air,” he said.

“I was training all the way through lockdown but the motivation wasn’t always there because I had no end goal.

“I’ve been out the ring for two years now so it would be nice to get a run of fights and hopefully I can pick up a few titles.

“In those two years I have matured physically and mentally but I’d have liked to have started my career two years ago as planned.

“I don’t like that I have missed two years, I’m eager to achieve something, I’m in the sport to reach the stars, I’m not just in it to do nothing.”

Price will come up against Dean Evans, who is also from Hereford, in Wiltshire as he looks to mark his debut with a win.

Promoter Neilson says he is keen to see what his latest signing can do, and hopes his home town gets
