Promoter Mark Neilson pleased to bring another boxing show back to Swindon in March

PROMOTER Mark Neilson says the appetite for boxing in Swindon has never been in doubt after confirming another show in the town in March.

Professional boxing returned to Swindon for the first time in more than a year in December at the Neilson Boxing-promoted ‘Kings of the Ring’ show at the MECA.

The show was run in conjunction with local trainer Paddy Fitzpatrick’s stable of fighters, and after deeming that a roaring success, another event is now planned for the MECA on March 23 named ‘Fight Town 1’.

Swindon’s former Commonwealth cruiserweight champion Luke Watkins will appear for a first fight in his hometown for almost two years, while Fitzpatrick stablemate and ‘Kings of the Ring’ headliner Ryan Martin will also feature.

Promoter Neilson said: “The last show was a roaring success. We had 14 fights and I looked at the records and it is the biggest show that’s ever been in Swindon.

“It just went seemlessly all the way through and we had some really good numbers in attendance.

“Swindon has been called a boxing town for a long time. I go to shows all around and people are always envious of Swindon because of what we have. Whether it be white collar or pros, there is always a really good turnout.

“There is an appetite for boxing in Swindon and seeing the top pros, like Luke Watkins and Ryan Martin, it is a masterclass when they are in there. It is great for the fans to see quality boxing.

“It worked really well with Paddy and his stable of fighters. We got on really well and the show was a success because we worked together really well so we are going to do it again.

“We will get all of Paddy’s guys out, some more debutants and more local boxers so it will be another good night.”

Watkins and Martin will lead the line-up in March, with Fitzpatrick stablemates Sam Smith, Harry Webb, Bradley Townsend, Bec Connolly and Jensen Irving also featuring, the latter on debut.

In total, 13 bouts have been booked so far, with Swindon duo Phil Williams and Saitemin Eltuyev scheduled for bouts too.
