Promoters Neilson Boxing aim to get Swindon fighter Kelvin Young firing once more

KELVIN Young’s return to the ring will be held at the Play Football Arena this Easter.

The 29-year-old has reversed his decision to hang up the gloves and has signed a three-fight 12-month promotional deal with Neilson Boxing, the first being on Saturday, April 15.

And as the promoters look to put a tricky 12 months behind them, they feel that with Keith Mayo-managed Young teaming up with former trainer Richard Farnan once more, they will start to see the former IBO super-middleweight inter-continental champion get back to somewhere near his best.

Mark Neilson said: “There are different Kelvins that can turn up. He can say all the right things in the press, but then we can see on the night things aren’t quite right.

“If the right Kelvin turns up, we will be alright. He is with Rich Farnan again and I don’t think anyone will disagree Kelvin was at his best when he was with Rich.

“He doesn’t want to go out on the losses that he has had, he wants to go out on a high.

“April will be a warm-up in front of a home crowd, nothing too challenging, but to get him back at home with a win, then possibly an eliminator of some sort and then a title.

“It could a Southern Area, it could be something like an IBO inter-continental title again.

“All the sanctioning bodies have these international belts or inter-continental belts – he just wants another belt to go out on a high.”

Despite the saturation of boxing shows in the town – white-collar and amateur– Neilson Boxing are confident that the paying public still have an appetite for professional boxing.

Tony Neilson said: “Yes, there are lots of white collar shows where your football mates try and go in the ring and swing at each other – if people want to go and watch that that’s fine.

“We do have a different crowd that are followers of a professional sport. Boxing in Swindon has a big following.

“We looked at two venues rather than one for this show and we are looking at more fights than we actually need.”
