Swindon fighter Ryan Martin set to face Hungarian fighter Zoltan Szabo on Fight Town 1 card

HUNGARIAN Zoltan Szabo will look to put an end to his six-fight losing streak when facing Swindon’s Ryan Martin at the Oasis Leisure Centre on April 27.

Promoter Mark Neilson has drafted in the 24-year-old former Hungarian super-lightweight champion to face Paddy Fitzpatrick-trained Martin – whose record stands at 11-2-0.

Despite Szabo’s poor form of late – which has dampened his own record to 25-18-0 – Neilson insists the eight-round bout is far from a forgone conclusion.

Szabo boasts impressive form lines, having previously fought Robbie Davies Jnr – who controversially defeated Wiltshire’s Joe Hughes in their British super-lightweight title bout in Liverpool on Saturday.

Martin’s opponent was also previously matched against former WBO European lightweight contender Stephen Ormond, who only defeated the Hungarian fighter on points.

And it’s Szabo’s former fights that have caught the eye of Neilson, who admits this month’s bout at the Fight Town 1 show in the town presents the Hungarian with a chance to leap back into the limelight.

He said: “Zoltan has a mixed record. But, like Ryan, he told us that he wants to fight people of decent calibre.

“He doesn’t want to be fighting people that are just there doing the rounds, he wants to step up to the mark.

“He’s caused some upsets in the past – he’s a Hungarian champion, has fought a couple of Brits before and upset them.

“He’s fought Robbie Davies Jnr, Stephen Ormond – who was 22 at the time – beat him on points. He certainly comes to fight.”

Martin’s stablemate Luke ‘Duke’ Watkins will also take to the ring for the inaugural Fight Town card.

The heavy-hitting nature of both Watkins and Martin’s opponents mean little can be guaranteed – and promoter Neilson highlighted both visitors’ heavy win-knockout ratio ahead of the 18-card evening.

He added: “Of Zoltan’s 25 wins, 11 of those are knockouts.

“He’ll fancy leapfrogging up the rankings.

“Luke and Ryan are the two main features, Luke will fight over eight rounds too.

“Usually, you’d get one at the top of the bill. But we’ve managed to get both.

“It’s great to have Luke back at the Oasis after his fights with Matchroom on Sky Sports.

“He’s got a great following too. It will be great for his fans to see him compete in his hometown.”
