Unbeaten flyweight Harry Mullins is set to challenge for the vacant Southern Area title on March 3.

The 20-year-old from Bromley is trained by his dad Samm, who is head coach at Lambeth’s Churchills Boxing Gym.

Mullins (6-0) won the 2020 National Amateur Championships before turning professional the following year.

He will face Somerset’s Paul Roberts (3-4) for his first belt in the paid ranks.

Asked about training his son, Samm said: “It’s twice as hard for him and twice as hard for me. I’m on his case twice as much, but I keep saying if he doesn’t want to put up with it he can go and find another coach.

“At the moment it is working, we’re kind of pushing each other. But I do feel for him, because not only is he living with his dad but he’s living with his coach.

“He won titles as an amateur and I believe he can do it as a pro. I’m not going to go shouting out he is the best flyweight in the world. But if we don’t win the Southern Area then I can tell you now that he won’t be boxing.

“If he wins titles then he can push on. If he doesn’t, I’m not there just to make the numbers up.

“I say it to all my fighters: ‘If you can’t win a Southern Area, then you shouldn’t be in the gym’. I don’t mean that with any disrespect, but it is a minimum belt, a start, for anything fighting.

“Harry is only 20 so they [Roberts’ team] think he is a kid, but they are in for a shock.”

After two curtailed ring returns, Bristol’s Anton Haskins is hoping it will be third time lucky as he aims to breathe life back into his boxing career this month.

The lightweight, and son of former world champion, Lee Haskins, will break his 630-day sabbatical from the sport on Saturday, November 20 when he features on Neilson Boxing’s Fight Town show in Swindon.

Earlier this year the Bristolian was due to get back on track, but was unlucky to see two fights fall through after late pull outs from opponents.

However, with COVID keeping him out of the ring, Haskins reflected on the last 18 months positively as he has been training with his Dad, which has left him eager to show the fruits of his hard work.

“The last year and a half have been hard, because fighting is the only thing that I know how to do and when that gets taken away from me, I’m a bit clueless,” he said.

“I stayed in training, because my Dad is my trainer anyway he did all of my pad work at home and things like that.

“He (Dad) wasn’t very nice with the training, but then you can’t have people who are going to be nice to you because boxing isn’t a nice place to be, it’s a horrible place.

“I’m looking forward to getting back in the ring, but I love fighting in front of a crowd. After a win everyone is hugging you, taking pictures of you and you feel like a bit of a celebrity.

Last time out, Haskins claimed his first stoppage as a professional against Daniel Alder in Bristol to take his record to 2-0. Next up, 21-year-old is pencilled in to face Jamie Quinn in Wiltshire, with the contest scheduled for four rounds.

Promoter Mark Neilson says he’s eager to see what Haskins will bring to the show at Swindon’s MECA in Regent Circus.

“Anton will always have a buzz about him because of his Dad, but he’s got some talents of his own that he’ll be keen to demonstrate, he’s definitely one to keep your eye on,” he said.

BOXING coach Liam Lathbury says protégé Connor Gray is ready to make a statement as a professional with the Wiltshire fighter set to make his debut this month.

Gray, who is based in Calne and trains out of Lathbury’s Emerald gym in Chippenham, will feature on Neilson Boxing’s latest Fight Town show which is taking place on Saturday, November 20 at Swindon’s MECA.

Lathbury has been training Gray since he was a teenager, and says he is looking forward to the super-lightweight take to the ring.

“He was 13-years-old when he first came to the gym, and he was getting into a little bit of mischief in school and stuff like that,” said Lathbury, who also revealed Gray will be managed by Ronnie Davies.

“Then he started knuckling down and got right into it. We were planning on having another year as an amateur but because of the pandemic and boxing going the way it has we’ve decided for him to go professional.

“In a way, Covid has been a bit of a blessing in disguise for us because it’s given us time to focus on all the things we need to do, but he has always had a professional style because he has good movement and places his shots very well.”

Alongside Gray, there will be a host of talent from across the South West on the same bill in Wiltshire, with former Commonwealth champion Luke Watkins headlining.

Gray will be making a fast start to life as a professional, as he is also due to box a week later in Bracknell.

Promoter, Mark Neilson says he is anticipating a dominant display from the Wiltshire prospect.

“I’ve heard some great things about Connor and I’ve seen him spar some experienced professionals before, where he more than held his own,” he said.

“Liam has been working with him for a long time now and he has a really good reputation of developing fighters in the right way.

“With his amateur background and the amount of time he’s had to prepare due to Covid, I’m looking forward to seeing him in the ring.”

“In those two years I have matured physically and mentally but I’d have liked to have started my career two years ago as planned.

“I don’t like that I have missed two years, I’m eager to achieve something, I’m in the sport to reach the stars, I’m not just in it to do nothing.”

Price will come up against Dean Evans, who is also from Hereford, in Wiltshire as he looks to mark his debut with a win.

WELTERWEIGHT Max Mudway says his new family life has sharpened his focus when it comes to professional boxing as he readies himself to return to the ring, writes Matt Davies.

Mudway, who has a perfect record of 4-0 as a professional, is set to star on Neilson Boxing’s Fight Town show in Swindon on Saturday, September 18th, in what will be his first outing for almost a year and half.

The 25-year-old’s career shuddered to a halt because of the COVID-19 pandemic, but away from the sport, he has had a busy year as he got engaged and became a dad for the first time.

The birth of his son, Dempsey, earlier this year has given the Stroud fighter a fresh motivation ahead of his fight next month as he paid tribute to his partner Ellie helping him stay on top of his preparation.

“Last year was a bad year for a lot of people, but for me, it definitely took a turn for the better as I met my fiancé,” he said.

“We have a baby now, so it has been a crazy year. I’ve learned a lot about myself and it has been quite eye-opening.

“I go to the gym every day and put myself through agony for my new family, it’s all for my little man.

“Before, it was just for me but now I have a couple of other people it’s for as well and that has given me another reason to want to succeed that little bit more.

“Being in camp kills me because I’m away early in the morning and sometimes I don’t get back until late at night.

“I have to hold my hands up to my partner because she is the one getting up late at night so get up and train.”

In the ring, Mudway admits the delay has put an end to any momentum he had at the beginning of last year, but says he is looking to remain as active as possible for the remainder for 2021.

“Once the New Year starts I’m going for titles and nothing is getting in my way because I’ve missed out on a lot,” he added.

“Pre-covid we were looking at trying to fight for the Southern Area title, so had that of all gone to plan I would like to think I’d have fought for that title already.

“We are planning on fighting in September and then again in October to keep busy.”

Mudway will be featuring on the show alongside Fight Factory stablemate Shabir Haidary, who is making his debut, as well as other talent such as former Commonwealth cruiserweight champion Luke Watkins.

Neilson’s next show, which will feature a host of homegrown talent including Swindon’s former Commonwealth champion Luke Watkins, will take place on Saturday 18th September at the MECA.

The event will be the first of its kind for well over a year after Covid-19 curtailed Neilson Boxing’s last proposed show back in April 2020.

In addition to Watkins, who has a record of 14-2, the show features talent from further afield in the south west, such as Oxford’s Brad Townsend, Somerset’s Ryan Wheeler and son of former world champion Lee Haskins, Anton, who is unbeaten since becoming a professional in 2019.

Reflecting on the card and the return to action, Neilson can’t wait to get underway.

“We are delighted to be back and we are back with a bang,” said the Swindon promoter, who also revealed a plethora of Wiltshire fighters who are set to star in September.

“The line-up is great, we have Luke Watkins who is a top 10 ranked cruiserweight and he will be fighting for some titles soon.

“We have a couple of debuts, which is always good. People might not have heard of these but we have a young lady called Megan Redstall who is fighting out of Mark Kent’s gym Contender in Melksham and we also have Connor Gray from Liam Lathbury’s Emerald set up in Chippenham too.

“Johnny Ward will be on the show. He looks good, he sounds good and he’s a really hard-hitting super-middleweight, who has changed his coaching set up so it’s exciting to see what he will bring to the table.”

Over recent years Neilson Boxing have enjoyed great success with their shows attracting large crowds at both the MECA and Oasis Leisure Centre in Swindon.

Despite tickets only just going on sale, Neilson says he has been encouraged by the uptake so far and is looking forward to hosting another live show.

“Not only are we back, but we are back at the MECA too which is a great small hall venue for boxing and Swindon fight fans are chomping at the bit,” he added.

“Hopefully we will lift the roof off the place. We have only just started selling tickets and they’re already going quite quickly online, so looks like it’s going to be a sell-out.

“A standard ticket is £40, this is going to be a card with 10 great fights and a real quality operator and hometown hero in Luke Watkins as main event. In addition to that we also have a Southern Area title final eliminator as chief support to Luke, so it makes for a great night out.”

BRADLEY Townsend says he cannot wait to show his new and improved style after switching up his coaching set-up during lockdown.

The fighter, who was born in Oxford, has a perfect record of 8-0 as a professional, as he looks ahead to his ring return next month.

The 26-year-old will feature on Neilson Boxing’s show on Saturday, September 18 in Swindon, as he faces Faheem Khan, 14-11-2, in a final eliminator for the southern area welterweight title.

During lockdown Townsend split with his long-term coach, Paddy Fitzpatrick after the Irishman opted to retire from the sport.

However, after linking-up with new trainer Robert Lloyd Taylor, the unbeaten prospect he feels he has improved as a fighter since his last outing in 2019.

“When Paddy announced his retirement it was a little bit of a shock but he guided me in the right direction,” he said.

“Since I started with Robert it has been great, we get on really well, he has a really good gym and he has great contacts.

“I’m more excited to fight now than I was 18 months ago.

“I can’t wait to get back in, I’ve got a new coach and I’ve developed as a fighter too.

“We’ve been working on my power. Robert wants me to trade punches a lot more and I feel a difference myself, I’m sitting in my shots more so I should produce a much better performance when it comes to power and strength.

“Usually I’m moving around a lot in my fights, but this time I am looking to do some damage.”

Townsend is a regular feature on Neilson Boxing shows, appearing five times in his eight-bout career and promoter Mark Neilson says he is looking forward to watching the fighter face Khan.

“The welterweight division is a really congested division domestically,” explained Neilson.

“Faheem is very experienced, he’s had nearly 30 fights and Bradley is only 8-0 but he’s a really slick mover – he doesn’t punch a massive amount but he’s in with a durable opponent.

“I think it will be a really skilful 10-round fight and it is great support to the main event, which is former Commonwealth champion Luke Watkins.”

The show is set to take place on September 18 at the MECA in Swindon.
